Follow me, s'il vous plait!

Sisterhood is like a box of chocolates…You never know what you’re going to get.

It’s 4 AM, and insomnia has once again settled itself in me.  I knew that Jester coffee was a mistake, but caffeine is just too, too good.

Sorry for the unnecessary tidbit.  I just hope you all forgive me for any nonsensical thoughts that may forge themselves into this post.  I’m blaming the mocha.

So to start off with what I was meant to say, I woke up this morning in a hurry to take a shower and head out of the apartment, but once again, I let my thoughts drift away in the midst of all the shampoo and steam.  I’m pretty sure everyone knows that you always get the most random of random thoughts in the shower, and this time was no exception for me.  I started thinking about Forrest Gump and his box of chocolates quote. I haven’t watched that movie in years, so I really have no clue where it came from.

Anyways, my immediate afterthought when I was saying the quote in my head was how much I could compare my sisterhood with Sigmas and the experiences I’ve had with them to this “box of chocolates”.  It’s so true.  You never know what you’re going to get.  That’s the beauty of a sisterhood, and more specifically, MY sisterhood.

First off, you get your box of chocolates.  You look at it, and it’s pretty on the outside and all perfectly wrapped.  The problem? You don’t ever really know what’s in store for you on the inside.  Some people take that leap of faith, rip it open, and dive right in.  Others take their time and save it for when they’re really craving some.  And there are always the many that avoid those chocolates altogether, because it’s just not their type of sweets.  I was the one who took my time, never really caring for it, and when it was time, I let myself get caught up in it all.  Let’s face it. Chocolate can be pretty addicting.

So I opened my own Sigma box of chocolates and was pleasantly surprised.  Most people have close-minded, generic views on what a sorority is, and what media portrays sorority girls to be doesn’t really cast us in a good light.  What I found in with Sigmas was something I didn’t really expect.  Each and every girl was so different from one another, and everyone was unique and talented in their own way.  I guess that’s what we have dubbed the “Sigma Sparkle” (cheesy, and I love it).  Anybody who just wants the same old chocolate over and over again can go grab a cheap bag of plain chocolate off the shelf, but let’s be honest.  Those can be really great at first, but after awhile, you just get sick of them and leave them behind.  With a box of chocolates, they’re all different, and like most chocolates in those boxes, it’s what’s inside that counts!

On first glance, you can categorize the girls, er..chocolates, from the outside. Some people are that super sweet, bright white chocolate that never fails to make you smile.  Some are the regular, good old reliable milk chocolate. And others are just like dark chocolate, bitter at first and melt into something sweet.  I know I’m probably sounding pretty insane right now, but bear with me. My over-extended analogy will wrap up soon enough.

So obviously I worked my way through the box of chocolates, getting to know each one on a deeper level.  I finally got to see what’s inside each little chocolate in this big box of sisterhood, and with each finished chocolate, there was a sense of satisfaction of finally seeing what was inside.  You get some that are just plain nutty…I mean that in the most loving and literal sense (for my Sigmas who happen to see this).  Some are sweeter than you ever expected, some fruity, and some just completely different on the inside than you could have ever imagined.

I could say that I was satisfied, proud, and borderline diabetic after my box of chocolates was done, but technically, my Sigma box of chocolates is endless. With every semester that pasts, a handful of new chocolates appear in my box, and I can honestly say that it’s such a privilege to have the opportunity to consistently meet new and amazing girls that I would have never met in my lifetime if it weren’t for Sigmas.

I found my box of chocolates, and I don’t care what anybody has to say about it. It’s special and perfect in every way possible, and I can only hope that other people get the chance in life to find their own box of chocolates.
